Dr. James A. Moreland

dr james morlandDr. James A. Moreland was born in Panola County, Texas to Elna and L. J. Moreland on June 23, 1929. His family later moved to Houston, Texas where he attended the public schools and graduated from Phillis Wheatley High School in 1945. He enrolled at Fisk University in Nashville, Tennessee in January 1946 and graduated in 1950 with a B.S. degree In Mathematics. After graduating from Fisk University he moved to Chicago, Illinois and enrolled at Loyola Dental School where he received his DDS degree in 1955. Dr. Moreland returned to Texas where he took and passed the exam given by the State Board of Dental Examiners in Dallas, Texas.

Upon completion of the State Board, he joined the Army to complete his obligation after deferment and completed his basic training at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, Texas. He was then transferred to Fort Chaffee, Arkansas as Lt. James A. Moreland to work in the Dental Corp. After completing two years of active duty he was discharged as Captain James A. Moreland. After his discharge in 1955 he continued to serve six years of Reserve Duty. He returned to Houston, Texas and began his practice of General Dentistry which lasted for forty three years.

During his time of practicing dentistry he served the Charles A. George Dental Society as President. He worked with various charitable organizations and served Gulf State Dental Association as President and Executive Secretary for a number of years. He also held membership in the National Dental Association. In 1967 when the NDA convention was held in Houston, Texas he was Exhibits Co-Chairman. Being a member of the Local, State and National Dental organizations afforded many trips in the USA and the Caribbean.

Dr. Moreland has been married to the love of his life, Melba, for 50 years. He is the father of one son, Glenn Moreland, an engineer and has two grandsons; Glenn Scott and Robbie Moreland. Dr. Moreland is a member of Saint Mary’s United Methodist Church of Houston, Texas. He holds membership in Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Alpha Eta Lambda Chapter. He has been a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity for sixty years and has been the recipient of numerous service awards.
