Dr. Zeb F. Poindexter

dr zeb f poindexterDr. Poindexter was born April 25, 1929 in Fort Worth, Texas, graduated I.M. Terrell High School in 1945, Wiley College in 1949, Texas Southern University in 1952 and the University of Texas Houston Health Science Center Dental Branch in 1956. His degree from Texas Southern was in Endocrinology and he served as a Second Lieutenant in the Air Force Reserves and left active duty with the rank of Captain.

While always active in his community and the dental field, Dr. Poindexter retired from private practice in the year 2000 after 42 years of service in the Sunnyside area of Houston. He founded the ZEB Poindexter Chapter of the Student National Dental Association and held a faculty appointment as Associate Professor of Community Relations at the UTHHSC Dental Branch.

His numerous service honors are with organizations such as the American Fund for Dental Education where he was a Century member, Admissions Committee for the UTHHSC Dental Branch, Board member of the UNCF, President of the Gulf State Dental Association, Treasurer of the Charles A. George Dental Society, Life member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc., Board member of the Urban League, Chairman of the Multicultural Facility Committee of the Texas Medical Center at Houston, Trustee in 1973 and Convention Chairman of the National Dental Association, and was nominated AGD Outstanding Dentist, State of Texas in 1991 and received the UT Outstanding Alumnus Award in 1990.

Dr. Poindexter became a fellow in the International College of Dentists in 1992, has membership in the Omicron Kappa Upsilon Honor Society, life membership in the American Dental Association, was listed in Who’s Who in the Southwest, Who’s Who in the Black Community, and was a delegate to the Texas State Dental Convention.

He has held membership in numerous organizations including the Charles A. George Dental Society, National Dental Association, American Dental Association, Gulf State Dental Association, Houston District Dental Association, Academy of General Dentistry, American Association of Dental Schools, National Minority Recruiting Organization, Texas Dental Association and International College of Dentists.

His community has also received his help through the YMCA Century Club, St John Baptist Church, Loyal Baptist Church and Eldorado Social Club.

His wife since 1953, Ruby Revis Poindexter, daughters, Merlene Poindexter Russell and Eleanor Patricia Davis, and son, Zeb F. Poindexter III, DDS join us in saluting their husband and father for 50 years of service to his community since graduating dental school.
